| Workshop 1: Advocating for your Child/ Youth |
| Guest Speaker: Tom Filipovic September 21, 2011 -> 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.Tom Filipovic is an Ontario Certified Teacher who has been advocating for individuals with LDs for many years.In this workshop, parents will understand the IPRC process. They will learn how to determine whether their specific case qualifies for support under provincial legislation. Parents will also learn how to effectively advocate for this support; they will learn what to say, how to say it, and to whom they need to say it to. |
| Workshop 2: Organizing the Disorganized Learner |
| Guest Speaker: Diane Vandenbossche October 5, 2011 -> 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. & 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.Diane has 29 years of teaching experience and runs Fresh S.T.A.A.R.T., a consultation service for with learning disabilities.This workshop will discuss the daily challenges of assisting the disorganized child/ youth and will provide suggestions and strategies for success. |
| Workshop 3: Preparing for the IEP/IPRC Process |
| Guest Speaker: Maria Zangrilli October 19, 2011 -> 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.Maria Zangrilli works as a Programming and Assessment Teacher with TCDSB. She has over 20 years of experience in special education programming at the elementary and secondary levels.This workshop will discuss the IPRC process and parents involvement in the IEP to ensure effective communication and the best care for the child(ren). |
| Workshop 4: Successful Transitioning |
| Guest Speaker: Mitchell Curci November 9, 2011 -> 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.Mitchell Curci has worked in the area of special education for over 35 years. He supports students at The YMCA Academy with transition planning in his role as Guidance and Special Education Specialist.This presentation is designed to help parents better understand the transition process of students with exceptionalities as they move from elementary to high school and then to post-secondary opportunities. |
| Workshop 5: The Emotional Impact of Learning Disabilities |
| Guest Speaker: Christina Ferri March 21, 2012 -> 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.Christina Ferri is an Ontario Certified Teacher and the past Resource Facilitator for the LDA Toronto.This seminar will focus on the emotional impact of LD on children and their families and will offer strategies for how to help children emotionally cope at home, school and play. |
| Workshop 6: Dealing with Difficult Behaviours |
| Guest Speaker: Dr. Audrey Huberman Ed.D. April 4, 2012 -> 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.Dr. Audrey Huberman has extensive academic and practical experience designing and implementing programs that position learners for success both socially and academically.Dr. Huberman will be presenting a special workshop on helping parents learn strategies for the child displaying challenging behaviours. |
| Workshop 7: Helping Your Child/ Youth Develop Positive Self-Esteem |
| Guest Speaker: Wayne Harrison April 25, 2012 -> 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.Wayne Harrison is a Behaviour Consultant/ Therapist at a Mental Health Hospital. Wayne is a graduate of Concordia University and George Brown College. He has worked with adults, youths and children with learning disabilities for many years.This workshop will help parents understand self-esteem in their child(ren)/ youth with learning disabilities and/or AD(H)D. Parents will receive strategies for improving and maintaining positive self-esteem among their children both academically and socially.Please note that a corresponding self-esteem workshop will also be offered for youth on April 21, 2012 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 (noon) for ages 13 – 15 and 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. for ages 16 – 19. |
| Workshop 8: Cogmed Working Memory Training |
| Guest Speaker: Reena Kronitz & Howell Gotlieb May 16, 2012 -> 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.Reena Kronitz is the Chief Psychologist and Senior Director of JVS Toronto and Howell Gotlieb is a Senior Psychological Associate at JVS Toronto.This presentation will address Working Memory, what it is and why it is related to learning and attentional problems in children and youth. A demonstration of the Cogmed Working Memory Training program will be featured. 19. |
